Food Bank Logistics
Susan will introduce us to the logistics of food movement to support the many programs at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank (NEIFB). For instance, oranges may be in shortage for Waterloo but in surplus in Rockport, IL. Waterloo may have a surplus of lettuce and arranges shipment to Mason City which has a shortage. In her presentation she will address answers to these and other questions:
How are shipments arranged? How are surplus and shortages identified? What transportation concerns arise for perishables? Are there restrictions for trailers that transport food? How are shipments tracked from source to NEIFB? What capacity does NEIFB have for receiving and shipping? What amount of staff and time is spent on loading and unloading food? How does technology enable NEIFB to provide its great community service?
