WATERLOO TECHNICAL SOCIETY

Wednesday 8th, May 2013

Cedar Falls “Clarion Inn” Against the Grain Restaurant

(Formerly called the Holiday Inn)

Topic: CFU’s Electric Load Growth

Speaker: Mr. Ed Schultz

Ed will be addressing the top 10 challenges facing the Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU’s) generation portfolio for the next 25 years. These challenges include legislative initiatives, EPA rules, retrofitting of existing plants, impacts of a carbon tax, declining reserves, potential for biomass, nuclear alternatives and renewable options.

As the electric load growth continues in the Cedar Valley, the need for additional electric power generation will be challenging for the Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU). Many factors are affecting decisions for existing generation as well as the selection of future generation. CFU currently has rates among the lowest in Iowa and the mid-west due primarily to its high dependence on coal fired generation. The coal industry is under attack from numerous fronts and the accompanying environmental concerns challenges CFU to look at alternative generation sources while maintaining low rates.

Ed Schultz is the Director of Operations (COO) at the Cedar Falls Utilities. He has been with CFU for 13 years and previously held various Manager level positions at Tucson Electric Power. Prior to working in Tucson he worked for Consumers Power in Jackson, Michigan. He graduated from Iowa State University with a BSEE and has taken a number of post graduate classes at Arizona and UNI.
