Vortex Shedding Flow Meters for
Military, Automotive and Industrial Applications
Topic: Mr. Medin will give an overview of J-TEC’s Vortex Shedding technology, the Physics behind Vortex Formation and the Advantages & Disadvantages of using a vortex flowmeter.
J-TEC's first development efforts resulted in a technique for measuring ocean currents and an anemometer for the National Data Buoy Program. They have been providing vortex flow meters and sensors for automotive, industrial, military and mining applications since 1968.
By the mid 1980’s, J-TEC’s crosswind sensor had met all design and test requirements and was approved for use on the M-1 Tank. Within a few years, it became the only crosswind sensor used on new M1A2 tanks built by General Dynamics.
J-Tec also sells flowmeters for the measurement of engine crankcase blowby gases as well as engine intake and exhaust air flow. J-TEC Associates, Inc. is located in Cedar Rapids, IA
Speaker: Dave Medin, J-TEC’s Director of Engineering, is a 29 year Electrical Engineer who got his modest start back in the early 70’s building model rockets and taking apart everything in his parents’ house that was either broken or provoked curiosity, some of which never got repaired but provided great learning platforms. Dave got his B.A. in Physics from St. Olaf College in 1983, and since has specialized in test equipment design hosted everywhere from mine shafts to aircraft carriers. His tenure with J-TEC, begun in 2006, continues his involvement in test equipment design. Dave also has an interest in the performing arts, and has appeared in numerous productions in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area, including Orchestra Iowa's “Follies” at Gallagher Bluedorn in 2009. He also is a private pilot and frequently visits the Waterloo area.
