Cedar Falls Pizza Ranch, 4302 University Avenue, Suite B

Transporting NASA's Largest Core Stage

Description: The Wheelift transporter was used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, to move large rocket engines for the Artemis space program.

While the Artemis I mission won't land on the lunar surface, the trip itself will be the farthest a vehicle designed for human astronauts has ever traveled into space. The mission completed a lunar flyby early Monday morning, December 12, 2022.

Program Chair: Steven Crouse

Speaker: Craig Schmeiser, our speaker, is a University of Iowa educated Mechanical Engineer. He joined Doerfer Engineering in Cedar Falls in 1986 as a Project Manager. Doerfer is now known as TDS Automation in Waverly, IA. In 2004 he helped Doerfer develop Wheelift Transporters to move extremely heavy loads.

Craig was first introduced to NASA in 2011 to help with ideas to carry a new large rocket. He retired from Doerfer in 2017. Since then he has been a consulting engineer serving as NASA’s “Subject Matter Expert” for the transporters used to moe the Artemis Core Stage
